The Morphy Richards Coffee Maker Review
Morphy Richards was founded in 1936 when a British engineer, Donal Morphy, met a British salesman, Charles Richards (1). Together, they set out to embody the epitome of British design and tradition by developing innovative products to simplify people’s lives.
Let’s see how the Morphy Richards coffee machine meets that lofty goal.
Design – 4/5
The Morphy Richards coffee maker is simple yet classy with textured edges. It’s fairly large, measuring 18.8 x 23 x 33.5 inches and weighing 6 pounds. But its square sides help slim it down, making your countertop feel less cluttered.
The Morphy Richards coffee maker comes in many fun colors for your kitchen aesthetic, including sage green, white, cream, and black.
It has a patterned plastic casing, so it’s not as durable as metal, but this keeps the price reasonable.
The Morphy Richards coffee maker includes a heat-resistant glass carafe equipped with a mess-free pouring spout that I found very effective. It has a capacity of 1.8 L plus an ergonomic handle and accents that match its colored body. It also comes with a reusable cupcake filter basket and a measuring scoop.
Features – 4/5
The Morphy Richards coffee maker brews up to 12 cups with 900 Watts of power, akin to the strength of single-serve coffee brewers from brands like Keurig or Nespresso (2). It has most of the standard features you expect from cheap coffee machines, including programmable brew timing, an automatic Keep Warm function, and a coffee strength selector.
To wake up to the delicious aroma of fresh hot coffee waiting, press and hold the Programmable Timer, the button on the top left, for 3 seconds. Press the button on the top right to increase the timer and watch the LCD display. To decrease it, push the button on the middle right.
You can choose between three strength settings, from mild to bold. Morphy Richards Verve uses a pour-over technology shower head to evenly wet the coffee grounds, ensuring you’ll get a full-bodied flavor from your brews (3).
Shower screens . . . uniformly distribute water across the coffee bed. This helps to quickly saturate dry ground coffee during the bloom phase, which then assists with more even extraction
If you need to stop your coffee brewing at any time, simply press the power button again. However, this will not allow you to pause and continue brewing, as it interrupts the process. A pause-and-serve feature would be a welcome addition to this machine.
The Keep Warm function and the hot plate automatically keep your coffee hot for up to 30 minutes.
Coffee Flavor – 4/5
The lowest and default Coffee Strength Selector setting yields a nice and smooth cup. It is best for brewing smaller coffee quantities as it can taste a bit weak when making larger volumes. I noticed it came out relatively cool compared to other coffee machines, something to keep in mind if you like your coffee piping hot.
The medium or strong settings, denoted by two or three coffee bean icons, are the best option for more flavor when brewing a full carafe.
They also produce a slightly hotter brew. Use the strongest setting to get the most out of weaker flavored coffees, such as pre-ground or decaf.
Ease of Use – 3/5
Using the Morphy Richards coffee maker is straightforward. Turn it on, and add cold water to the reservoir using the internal water gauge for the number of cups you want. Scoop in your grounds, select your desired intensity, set a time, and wait for your fix.
The biggest hassle with this model is that the filter basket is not removable, and the grounds tend to stick to the bottom when emptying them. A quick get-around is to lift the bowl holding the filter basket and rinse both with cold water.
Cleaning is easy thanks to an integrated “Clean” function. To descale your coffee machine, pour 6 cups of white vinegar and 4 cups of cold water into the reservoir, press and hold the Keep Warm/Clean button until the screen says Clean, and leave for an hour. Discard the cleaning solution and run the machine with pure water 2 or 3 times to rinse.
Value for Money – 5/5
The Morphy Richards coffee machine only costs $45, which is decent value for a programmable automatic coffee maker. Many models in this price range lack coffee strength selection, and we appreciate the trendy styling that definitely makes it look pricier than it is. Plus, you get a 2-year guarantee with this coffee maker. Just make sure to register it within 28 days.
Things we liked:
- Easy batch brewing for up to 12 cups
- Programmable up to 12 hours in advance
- Can choose three coffee strengths
- Cute and stylish design
Things we didn’t like:
- Plastic casing
- Cannot pause brewing
- Filter basket isn’t removable
Do Not Buy If…
- You want coffee programmed further in advance – The elegant Drew Barrymore coffee brewer has an impressive 14-cup capacity and is programmable up to 24 hours in advance. It’s also more compact and comes in a wider range of colors.
- You want the pause-and-serve feature – The lack of brew pause was one of our biggest complaints about the Morphy Richards coffee maker. If you know you can never wait for a full carafe before grabbing that crucial first cup, consider the retro-style Nostalgia Coffee Maker instead.
The Verdict
The Morphy Richards coffee maker makes brewing a breeze and does it at an affordable price. It’s programmable up to 12 hours in advance and lets you customize your coffee strength. It can brew anywhere from one to 12 cups, making it perfect for any size of coffee-drinking household. On the other hand, if you prefer a sturdier build or more advanced features, consider upping your budget and looking elsewhere.
